Mum’s the Word

The occasion of Mother’s Day goes way back to the 16th century from a time when people returned to the church in which they were baptised or where they attended services.

It would signify a return to the Mother Church (Mothering Day). This meant that families were reunited to the towns and villages where they grew up. It became customary for young people who were working as servants in large houses to be given a holiday on Mothering Sunday to visit their family and bring flowers for their mother.

The tradition lapsed, but in the late 1900s Anna Jarvis an American living in the state of Philadelphia introduced Mother’s Day in honour of her mother who died early in the decade and the governor of the state proclaimed the second Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day.  In 1913, the US Senate and House of Representatives officially dedicated the day to the memory of “the best mother in the world – your mother”.

With the arrival of American troops to East Anglia during World War II came their tradition of celebrating the Mother’s Day festival.  The idea caught on again in the UK and the centuries-old tradition of sending flowers as homage to mothers was revived and the day of celebration reverted to the fourth Sunday in Lent, as traditionally was.

Today, children still give mum flowers on Mother’s Day as well as treating her to lunch and offering up other gifts as a way of appreciation and if you are looking for a fantastic treat for mum, how about a makeover photo shoot?  The photo session can be an individual makeover or it could be a mother and daughter/s (see our fantastic testimonial below from our recent mother and daughters photo shoot). We are also offering a pamper package especially designed for a at-home spa-by-car treatment for mum.

“I really wanted to thank you all for a great time on Tuesday morning.  I know you do these things all the time, but it was the first time we had ever done anything like that and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.  Mum was exhausted afterwards and practically falling asleep in her lunch!!   Julie and Jane, you are both extremely talented!  Linda posted a couple of ‘selfies’ on Facebook of me and her after the shoot and the comments we received about our hair and make-up were amazing.  We felt famous for 15 minutes!  I managed to keep my hair looking good for work yesterday and I’ve never had such a startling good reaction – at least 10 people commented on it.    The venue was absolutely perfect, Mum felt very comfortable and, as you know, that was the aim of the day.  If she wasn’t happy then we wouldn’t have been.    ” Pam Finbow,  January 2014 – See inset picture.
