Crafty Things

There are many arts and crafts ideas out there,  to start as a business, a hobby or just to experiment with. Favourite crafts are jewellery making, card making, pottery, knitting, ceramic painting for example. My personal favourite is working with dry clay. I find working and moulding clay very therapeutic, and it gets my creative ideas working. Sometimes I have a success and sometimes I just make a mess.  Inset image shows a some of my work.  I sold a few of these pieces at a recent Christmas Fair.

Working with other people in a craft group can be fun as well as a social activity. Bouncing ideas and making suggestions by others input can be helpful and to learn new techniques and art mediums. I go to an art group once a week for a couple of hours where I switch off and concentrate on the creation. Mobile phone on silent and no outside distractions gives me time to unwind and relax which is ideal for a little digital detox time.

Arts and crafts are not just for creativity but also used by Art Therapists to help improve people’s mental health issues such as, distress and stress, cognitive functions, building self esteem and personal growth, so art is not just a hobby or a way to make a living it is a recognised technique to help those with health issues or disabilities.

Here are my five crafting benefits.

Creativity – The process of creating something new using imagination with various materials and mediums.

Socialising – Introduces you to a new community of like-minded people , builds relationships and it can be fun too.

Well-being – helps you to relax and gives you a feeling of achievement. It also works with manual dexterity. Working with your hands to develop creative skills.

Personal skills – Education of new subjects and the development to do something well.

Business – seeing your achievement good enough to make an income. Craft fairs and Etsy just a couple of marketing.
