Aromatherapy healing
Massage isn’t just about muscle relief; it’s the sensation and relaxation of the experience, of aromatherapy healing is part of it. To prepare for massage a therapist will ensure the treatment room, the towels and oils are warm. A cold room and product do not create the best experience for a massage client. The sense of touch, soft background spa music and the smell of aromatic oils are all part of the feeling of wellbeing. I always choose aromatic massage oils and Neal’s Yard Organic range is my clients’ favourites. Geranium and orange oil for warmer months for relaxation and juniper and ginger for colder months and troublesome muscles, it’s all about the aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy is not just about the calming scents used in massage, aromatherapy is the ancient knowledge of improving health with herbs, flowers and plants, it is about healing and wellbeing. You most probably know them as essential oils or as some say the life force of plants. Each essential oil has a benefit. The Egyptians used cedarwood and myrrh to preserve mummies, the Romans used it for pain relief, healing and making themselves smell nice. The use of essential oils was well-known and used predominately in the middle east. Around the 12th century the essential oils became perfume oils and herbalism for medicine and reached Europe.
Today Grasse, France is the capital of perfumes where most of the perfume laboratories are found. The top 10 perfume is Le Monde Su Mesure costing 1.5 million dollars, according to the most expensive perfumes in the world list. If you haven’t got that sort of money in your sock drawer, then Dior Savage is the most popular fragrance in the world at £60.
There are many off the shelf medicinal remedies such as Echinacea, a multi-level herbal remedy understood to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and have antiviral and antioxidant effects. Lemon balm helps sleep and mental health issues. Sometimes it’s an idea to look to natural remedies before turning to manmade chemical-based Pharmaceuticals.
There are multiple uses for essential oils. For personal use add a few drops of lavender (relaxation), patchouli (energising), jasmine oil(stress) in a bath. Tea tree oil for antiseptic if you need a little help with wound recovery. Every essential oil has a job to improve your wellbeing all you need to do is look them up and find the one you need, or you can make them yourself as there are plenty of books, websites and YouTube videos that will guide you. But you do need to be careful with mixing and using very concentrated potions if you go down the DIY route, as there can be side effects to concentrated oils. It’s best to study adverse results or best to take a fully accredited course in aromatherapy.
My personal favourite is an aromatherapy footbath for aching feet; 4 drops of eucalyptus and 3 drops of pine mixed in a foot bath of very warm water. Sit back, relax and enjoy. De-stressed feet ready for a summer pedicure. I just can’t wait for Summer.
